EU anti-dumping investigation has caused a big impact on China's ceramic industry1

According to reports, the China Ceramic Industry Association Foshan Office recently revealed that the EU has recently launched an anti-dumping investigation on Chinese ceramic kitchen utensils, and has already notified the Chinese mission to the European Union. It is likely to be formally opened this month (February). The Association reminds the ceramic associations of various provinces and cities as well as the ceramic enterprises that export to the EU to do a good job in preparing for the response.

If this case is actually filed, it indicates that the EU will conduct anti-dumping investigations on Chinese ceramics, including ceramic tiles, mosaics and ceramic kitchen utensils. This is the most influential ceramic anti-dumping case involving the largest amount of ceramic tableware in Indonesia this year.

China's daily-use ceramics have a very good market in the EU, and their reputation is quite good. If the EU is filed this time, there will be more than 2,000 companies involved. In 2011, the cumulative amount of Chinese kitchen utensils exported to the EU exceeded US$700 million. Once the anti-dumping duties were imposed, it would have the most serious impact on Chinese ceramic exports.

The EU has always been an important market for China's Foshan ceramic tile exports, and its reputation is also quite good. According to statistics, during the decade from 2001 to 2010, the annual average growth rate of Foshan ceramic tiles exported to the EU reached 78.6%, and the average annual growth rate of export value reached 84. %. From 2007 to 2009, the EU became the second largest ceramic tile export market in Foshan. However, affected by anti-dumping, from January to October 2011, Foshan’s exports of ceramic tiles to the EU plummeted.

In the face of the investigation, what kind of fate will China's ceramic exports usher in? How should we deal with it? Tuo Xinquan, the special commentator of the Economic Voice and vice president of the China WTO Research Institute of the University of International Business and Economics, expressed his views.

Anti-dumping will have a negative impact on the ceramic industry

Last September (2011), the EU's anti-dumping case against China's ceramic tile announced the final result, and the dust was settled. The EU recently decided to launch an anti-dumping investigation on Chinese ceramic kitchen utensils. Tu Xinquan said that the EU is a very important market for China's ceramic industry. The EU has repeatedly launched anti-dumping on different products of China's ceramics in such a short period of time, which has a relatively large impact on China's ceramic industry.

Tu Xinquan: From the background, it may also be related to the economic situation that Europe is facing now, because the European ceramic industry is mainly concentrated in southern European countries, which are what we call the so-called four European countries: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, etc. Now facing the most difficult situation, in recent years they will be more active in the application of marketing countervailing. The ceramic industry is also a relatively labor-intensive industry, so their trade protectionism mentality will be stronger. The anti-dumping of ceramic tiles launched in September last year has already had a great impact on the tiles in our country. Now if the ceramic tableware is once again launched anti-dumping, it should be said that there will be a relatively large negative impact on the relevant industries and related enterprises in our country.
