Despite the positive results of a study, the safety of a low-carb diet is again receiving attention.
A study published in the American Society of kidneys Journal concluded that a typical low-carb diet, including Atkins and South Beach, does not increase the risk of kidney damage in healthy people.
But for those who follow a low-carb diet, kidney damage is not the only potential risk factor.
A new multi-year study based on Sweden shows that people on a low-carb diet are significantly more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those on a non-low-carb diet.
The same study also overturned the working theory of the most effective way to lose weight.
The 25-year study, part of the Vasterbotten Intervention program or VIP, was published in the journal Nutrition.
The VIP, which started in 1985, aims to help Sweden develop better food labeling laws and guidelines, clearer nutrition information and more comprehensive health checks and consultations.
The project also includes cooking demonstrations and other health promotion activities.
The program focuses most of its attention on northern Sweden, where people, especially men, have a higher incidence of heart disease.
In the first few years of VIP study, managed by two universities and the National Welfare Council, the researchers noted that both men and women had reduced their fat intake and the number of heart attacks.
Men's fat intake decreased by 1992, down by 3%.
The intake of fat in women was slightly lower, at 4%.
According to Dr. Ingegard Johansson, the head of the study, this intake has been stable until 2005.
At that time, the low carb diet became the norm as more and more people turned to the Atkins diet program and others tried to lose weight.
At the time, the researchers found that cholesterol levels were rising, returning to levels before the start of the study.
In addition to increasing cholesterol levels, low-carb dieters are beginning to consume fewer and fewer complex carbohydrates.
The researchers said women who participated in the study also drank more alcohol.
Although there were some short-term weight loss at the beginning of these dietary plans, the researchers found that overall they failed in terms of long-term weight loss.
The body mass index, cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk of these dieters continue to increase.
