He was my second meeting with Mayank Ashar, chief executive and general manager of Kane India, and I quickly realized that he was different from several other CEOs I have met.
As I drove into the Oberoi of Gurgaon's bustling Udyog Vihar, I saw that the hotel building was almost invisible from outside the main entrance due to its building.
Ashar lives in the serviced apartment of the hotel and we meet at Amaranta, a minimalist restaurant named after an imaginary flower that has never withered.
"I'm glad it's quiet," he said with comfort . "
The last time we met, he had to stand up and tell the guests on the table next to him to be quiet.
When I approached Ashar for lunch with BS request, he asked if breakfast was OK.
So we're here at 8.
At 30 in the morning, when we ordered masala tea, ash began to tell me about his childhood, when most Indians worshipped the holy male Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal from an early age ·
Ashar was born in Miraj, Sanli, Maharashtra, and grew up in the Ghatkopar area of Mumbai.
"I remember waiting in line for two hours for water and rationing.
Looking back, I think we were poor, but we didn't feel poor at that time.
We have the most basic
Lottie, capada and Makan;
Good educational opportunities and good social relations.
This is a happy life.
Ashar said that as a country, India has lost people in the past after-
Independence Day.
Compared with Scandinavian countries, it is more common here to promote "immoral boundaries ".
Unfortunately, it starts at school and then moves to the workplace and society.
"If children cheat at school, they cheat more in society.
Ashar's father, who worked as a chemist at the Mafatlal group, was the first person in the big family to receive a college education.
"When my father finished the entrance exam, my grandfather asked him to work.
But he fought for college education.
One of the three things that make up who I am is one thing my father insists on.
So respect for education is still the only one.
Until today, the biggest factor affecting me.
Despite his limited means, Ash's father kept him in the well.
It is considered Fatima High School in Ghatkopar.
In 1970, Ash's family moved to Canada.
He worked there at school.
His father sold everything for his ticket at home.
His father started working in the film processing department but could not find a job as a manager.
His mother had never worked outside before and she joined a factory as a tailor.
Like many other immigrant families, they work at the minimum wage.
15-the only jobyear-
The old Ashar of the cleaning appliance section can be obtainedtime.
"This is one of the jobs I feel the same way.
We went to the cafeteria with trays.
"I know someone keeps cleaning behind their backs," he said . ".
"I remember what I did when I was 15, so I would respect the dishwasher in the cafeteria as much as the National Prime Minister did. He is no less.
As the conversation became intense, we decided it was time to order.
"Because I live in a serviced apartment here, my breakfast is covered.
"Barabah Haina (I'm right)," he told the waiter ). ".
Obviously Ashar is with the hotel staff who are familiar with his preferences.
I decided to order a poha and a berry pancake.
His Marsala omelet, chicken and steamed vegetables are his dishes.
I asked him if it was his usual breakfast, and he nodded: "We are all animals that we are used.
It is important to eat correctly.
I eat the same thing for breakfast.
Can't find this on the menu
"I was curious if he was eating at the hotel every day or cooking in the apartment.
"We cook, but sometimes we order.
I like Indian food, but it is so rich in carbohydrates.
I love dal chawal, raita and tandoori roti when I eat outside.
"In India you can ask for something on the menu and the hotel is happy to get it," he said . ".
"I drink very little --
Maybe once a month because it has zero nutritional value.
"Looking at his skinny figure and simple food choices, I think another passion for life should be fitness.
The struggle of the first few years did not give him any time to pursue anything else.
When he finished his chemical engineering from the University of Toronto and started his full work
He realized the importance of health at the time (with BP Canada ).
"When I have time, I will run on a jogging track about 400 long, but after a lap or two, I can't breathe.
So he began to work hard to improve his endurance, and when he was about 30 years old, he began to run seriously.
It's a natural process from 15 minutes to 60 minutes to the marathon.
"It was a great experience.
I realize that if people apply good principles to persistence, there will be many things to do in life.
I have run 80 marathons so far.
"Last year's knee surgery meant he couldn't run any more, but it didn't stop him from urging Kane's colleagues in India to take fitness seriously.
Once the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and health are met, humans need more so they can approach the real potential, he said.
Two people can come from the same university, but a motivated, dynamic, innovative employee will be more productive.
As a result, Ashar has set up a cross gym in the office with people exercising or doing yoga in the office cafeteria three times a week.
The other group ran on weekends under a project called sofa to 5 k (km.
"It makes the body stronger, the mind sharper, and you become more productive.
How much is an indicator of health-ups you can do.
An ordinary person should be able to push 40 times straight. ups. ” Ouch!
In the early days of his new job, Ashar got to know about 25 new people --
Hire chartered accountant
After talking about the company, he asked them what India's GDP (gross domestic product) is.
"Only one hand was raised.
She said, '5.
GDP grew by 5 percentage points.
These are chartered accountants. they are smart. They are obviously very good at memorizing, calculating and solving problems. but how can CA not know the GDP of this country ? " Especially Indian engineers and accountants who lack the right reading habits, he said.
Working in India is a personal challenge.
"I struggle with the hierarchy.
When he entered the meeting room, people stood up.
In Asian society, young employees will not object or talk back to senior executives.
"In Silicon Valley, young people are pushing the show because they have a strong point of view," he said . ".
"Young people may not always be right, but they are not always wrong.
"Instilling the habit of reading and taking care of health is only two messages he gives to his employees;
More importantly, money is not everything.
He told his people that it is important but will not give you happiness.
In fact, it is not the benefit of this job that has Ashar take over a company that is plagued by problems --
Including tax disputes with the government, the expansion of production
Sharing contracts and success.
There are two reasons for his return to India.
"I want to see how this country has gone through economic and social transformation.
Another thing is to do something for the country in my own way.
Ashar donated the "basic" part of the salary to charity every month.
"Because I made enough money, I didn't work almost anything.
I would like to take a look at the country and make a slight impact and hope to have a good working environment in which the company not only does a good job financially but also is a good corporate citizen
To simplify life, Ashar chose to live in a serviced apartment.
He cited the example of Silicon Valley, where some executives wear the same color to work every day so they can focus on their work.
"My life is simple.
So he moved into Oberoi with his wife and six suitcases.
I asked him if the current circumstances in India and the violence in the name of religion disturbed him.
He quoted the governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Raguram Rajan, as saying that debate, dialogue and diversity are important.
"It takes courage to say this.
Without a moral foundation, he believes, the economic engine will stop working.
China and Nigeria are struggling to find this.
"We are free to learn from the economy and technology from Silicon Valley, but we should be as comfortable as learning from good social ideas around the world.
"I realized it took us more than two hours to discuss the way of life.
When we were separated, I asked myself how many business leaders I met, who were themselves agents of change.
Instead of waiting for the government to ease the pressure for them.
