I have been dealing with Italian Ceramics: I collect them, I read them and I sell them.
When I have to write in English or talk to one of my American customers, I am always not sure: should I say Italian pottery, Italian ceramics, or Italian majolica?
I did some research and did some testing to dispel doubts.
I have learned a lot about this issue and would love to share my findings with you.
As an Italian, when I had to write in English or talk to one of my American customers, I was always not sure: should I say Italian pottery, Italian ceramics, or Italian majolica?
I did some research and did some testing to dispel doubts.
I have learned a lot about this issue and would love to share my findings with you.
Let's start with technical details.
Here is a brief review of the definition of the word ceramics, pottery and Majolica.
Once we know exactly what we are talking about, we define what they really mean to people.
Ceramic ceramics is the most common term.
It originated from the Greek keramos, meaning "clay ".
Historically, ceramics were prepared by shaping clay, decorating clay, often glazed and firing at high temperatures in the kiln.
However, this definition has changed.
The term "ceramic" now refers to a variety of materials, including cement and glass.
While all ceramics are fired at high temperatures, clay is no longer a key component of ceramics.
This is why, now, ceramics in this category do not technically include both pottery and porcelain, and their standard formula has generally represented a quality grade.
Pottery is a decorative or useful vessel made of wet clay and hardened by heat.
The type of clay used and the firing temperature give the pottery a different appearance and strength.
There are three main types of pottery.
Marchika-
Too, Maiolica-

Glazed Pottery, second firing.
After the first firing, dip the thick soup into the quick dry liquid glaze.
When dry, prepare hand-painted parts of the glaze.
The last firing at 1690 degrees Fahrenheit will allow the glaze to interact with the metal oxide used by the painter to create the deep translucent color that Marcho licat has.
The technology originated in the 9 th century Middle East.
By the 13 th century, majolica ware imported to Italy through Mallorca, the headquarters of trade between Spain and Italy.
The Italian mistakenly thought it was made on Mallorca and called it myoreka.
They were fascinated by this new method of making ceramics and soon began to replicate the process and adapt it to their creativity and tradition.
The rise of Italy's majolica in Europe was very fast. during the Renaissance, central Italy reached the peak of artistic quality --
15 century the end of 16 century early.
Nowadays, in English, the word Majolica is used to refer to ceramic products in the cultural tradition of the Italian Renaissance.
A big step forward.
Now I know that I collect and sell pottery, especially pottery, mainly marioka pottery in Italy.
However, there is still no answer to the original question.
When I talk to my American friend, I still don't know what I should call my beloved item.
I refused to use pottery because the word was so technical that I did the test using termItalian majolica.
Only the museum staff or experts understand what I mean, many of them think I'm working on the art of the istoriato Renaissance, and what I think of is the modern Italian marionica
Next, I tested the wording of the Italian pottery.
The result is good, everyone knows that I am talking about clay products in the shape of an Italian Bowl, an Italian vase, or an Italian tableware.
I am not satisfied, though.
Pottery is any kind of pottery made of wet clay and hardened by heating.
The price of pottery can be $20 chicken pot and $2000 Italian istoriato wall panel.
How can I convey the technical process behind Italian pottery and its unique quality and beauty?
I tested the term Italian ceramics and it works very well.
I found that it actually conveyed the message of high quality, including tableware and decorations.
There is a historical explanation for this.
Although "ceramic" is-
Now, in pure technical language
It is a more common term than pottery, and has been used for more than 3000 years in the country where this craft was born, and has evolved into an art.
Italy is one of these countries: we are proud to hand-make the best ceramics in the history of this art.
Italian ceramics include the "bouchero" of Etruscan, The Renaissance marjolika and rustwell, the Baroque tiles of Sicily, the "Zafa" in central Italy when we say Italian ceramics, the significance of contemporary clay art is far more than that of items made of clay, pottery, or Majorica.
These two words reflect the artistic heritage, history, regional tradition and creativity of a nation.
They touched our souls.
That's why so many people are passionate about Italian ceramics. Like you and I.
