People from Cadbury Adams recently sent me a few packs of Trident splashes inside cardboard cheesecake as part of their promotion of gum to help lose weight.
But I was moved by what was on the package.
Right next to the description of mint sugar/vanilla gum --
"Not food with low calories" is a line. "Really?
I turned it over and turned over the nutritional facts.
Fat 0g, sodium 0 mg, carbohydrate 2G, sugar alcohol 2G, no protein. And calories? Less than 5.
What's lower than this (
Chewing gum with less than 4,3, 2 or 1 calories)?
I am looking around the internet for some answers and it turns out that this line is the result of the government's request to prevent the company from being lowcalorie claim.
The standard is that an item must have more than 25% less heat than a normal item
Calorie version of the claim.
I'm not sure which one.
They have to compare themselves to the calorie gums, but here's an example of how they might be calculated.
A four-fold-sized sugary bubble gum (8g instead of 2)
25 calories, or 3.
125 calories per gram compared to 2. 5 (or less? )
Splash every gram of Trident.
It's 20% different so bingo: they have to say "not low"calorie food" --
Even if the calories are in one digit!
There are so many pressing labeling issues--
How about prohibiting chip companies from calling number 1? 75 servings? --
This is the case with government legislation.
Tax, hard work.
