A New York City restaurant specializing in "healthy" Chinese food has faced a lot of online resistance in the first week of its opening.
According to Eater, nutritionist Arielle Haspel and her husband Lee opened the Lucky Lee restaurant in Manhattan on Monday, promising "clean" Chinese
"People who like to eat Chinese food enjoy the benefits of eating Chinese food, which actually makes them feel good.
But as news of the opening of a "healthy Chinese restaurant" spread online, critics slammed the restaurant on social media, calling it a "racist" and accusing the owner of claiming to do better, healthier Chinese food than Chinese.
Haspel says gluten is available in the restaurant, wheat-Refined sugar-, GMO-, and additive-
Free dishes such as Romein, fried rice, kung pao chicken, honey-
Glazed Ribs and Tsos chicken in general.
The restaurant is owned and run by Haspel and her husband, and is also white, flying under radar most of the time until ill
Instagram post ideas.
It says: "We heard you are fascinated by lo mein but rarely eat.
You said you 'd feel sick the next day?
OK, wait till you get our HIGH lo mein slur. Not too oily. Or salty.
"The post was later deleted, but after the diners asked, both the offer and the restaurant won a lot of attention.
Dozens of comments have appeared on other Instagram posts, and people have also attacked the concept of "racist" on Twitter.
I don't think you realize how racist you sound, one netizen wrote. 'SHAME ON YOU!
No one wants your white wash and mild food! PLEASE STOP! Another wrote.
Some critics point out that Chinese food is not greasy and unhealthy in nature --
In fact, most of the food in China is vegetables and fish, very healthy.
Popular in China-
American dishes like sesame chicken and Zuo Zongtang chicken are not actually made in China.
"American Chinese food is a product of an era. Chinese immigrants must absorb their own food traditions in order to survive.
The food she belittled was a relic of that exclusion and struggle.
It was an insult and exploitation, one netizen wrote.
"We want you to feel great because we care about you," as it is said that authentic Chinese restaurants don't like it.
"This is too rude," wrote another netizen . "
As a person who grew up as an Asian-American, he has been eating authentic Chinese food that is "greasy" and "unclean" for 18 years and I can assure you that I am alive and I am healthy.
"If you want to have a look, I'm ready for the doctor's report," said another critic . ".
Some people are particularly upset with people who have opened a Chinese restaurant and claim to have something better.
Lee Kai-Fu's "no Chinese food" was written by a netizen ".
But many are just shocked that the restaurant concept has developed so far and no one has pointed out that it may be problematic for some.
"I feel almost sorry for you because of all the work.
But the fact that you entered the project without a friend or acquaintance telling you it was a bad idea is incredible --
"Although you know it's wrong, it's easier to think that you blindly choose to continue to do so," one commenter wrote . ".
She went on to say, "it's unacceptable for you to name your restaurant Lucky Lee "(a racist trope).
It is an inherent mistake that you portray Chinese food as a white "feel good" version, which is unacceptable.
It's unacceptable for you to open a store like this in New York.
In the absence of a clear recognition of where your money and ideas come from, the choice does not profit from a culture that is not yours.
Please educate yourself.
Please spare us.
The commenter concluded that people like you made me very angry.
"I was so disappointed with you.
Some critics have even started flooding the Yelp page with negative reviews, although they haven't really been to the restaurant.
In fact, Yelp is currently monitoring the page to weed out good reviews, and so far most verified reviews are positive.
Since the start of the riots, Haspel has posted a lengthy post on Instagram.
It started to say that we received some negative comments on Instagram the other day.
"Some of your reactions show us the cultural sensitivity associated with our concept of Lucky Lee.
We assure you that we will always listen and respond accordingly.
Some comments said that our Chinese food was made with "clean" cooking techniques and that our negative comments on all Chinese food made you feel great.
When we talk about our food, we are not talking about other restaurants, but about the lucky Lee restaurant.
The Chinese cuisine is very diverse and has many different tastes (
Usually delicious in our opinion)
Good for health.
"Every restaurant has the right to promote the front of the food.
We plan to continue to communicate and our food is made with high quality ingredients and techniques designed to make you feel great.
"Chef/boss, Arielle's husband is Lee, his life --
A long love of Chinese cuisine is a source of inspiration for this restaurant.
Lucky Lee's name reflects how the recipe was conceived.
'We also received some negative comments about being the owner of a Chinese restaurant, but not Chinese, 'he said.
The owners of Arielle and Lee are Jewish.
New Yorkers born and raised in the United States
Similar to the diet of many other New York Jews, bagels, smoked beef sandwiches and American Chinese food were a very happy part of their childhood.
New York is the ultimate melting pot, and Lucky Lee is another example of cultural integration.
This is a good thing for us.
"We love American Chinese food and at Lucky Lee restaurant we intend to celebrate it every day and serve delicious food," the post concluded . ".
Haspel also issued a statement to Eater telling the website: "I like to love American Chinese food.
I made some adjustments so I could eat and my friends and others could eat.
"In any case, I never thought about putting a culture in place.
I am very tolerant. we are here to celebrate the culture.
