On our first date with our wife, we went to a Chinese restaurant in Hamilton.
This was everyone's expectation for the Chinese at the time, with gorgeous carved dragon ornaments, paper lanterns, eggs, canned pineapple fried pork. That was 1979 (
She will kill me for revealing our age).
In the same year, a new Chinese restaurant opened on the east end of the city, just a few steps from Queensland on Centennial Avenue.
It's called the place of the East, and now it's an old 33-year-
Old institutions nearby.
It is still owned and operated by the same family.
Still maintain a retro feel on settings and menus.
Why shouldn't Chinese
Canadian comfort food has a place in addition to meatloaf, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese that has made such a comeback statement in recent years?
On a recent visit, I enjoyed this little step back when I was young. The service (
By those who obviously follow the routine for many years)
Usually fast, always nononsense.
Large portions (
But the service of most Chinese restaurants is.
The price is very good for groups, seniors and families (
The people who crowded the tables around us proved it).
Interesting food (
In the way "we exercise tomorrow).
Oh, you will see the knife and fork without chopsticks (
How is that retro)?
Several serious observations.
People who ask for "authentic" Chinese will be a little disappointed. This is old-
Stylish and comfortable food, all Canadian food
Inspiration adaptation
But I do think the Oriental Plaza should also be modernized by adding some lighter food, such as steamed dumplings and more vegetarian dishes (
I only counted a small number of candidates on a fairly extensive menu).
Starting this evening, we will go to the east square platter ($8. 25)
On the list of appetizers
Value for money, if you eat modestly like me, it's enough for a meal.
There are five medium-sized fried shrimps and five large pieces of roast pork ribs --
Delicious soup, not greasy, meat that you chew but don't have to chew bones --
Four large crispy wonwon with sweet and sour sauce, which is actually made of vinegar.
There are a few small mistakes.
In a fast moving place, there is now a 25-
It wasn't until the power supply arrived, a one-minute gap, until we reminded the server that a pot of green tea didn't show up.
Of course, the trunk line is shared and landed together.
There is a little hot pepper in the crispy orange chicken ($9. 75)
On the list of Sichuan
There is a lot of chicken broken, it is really fried crispy, withoverly-
Sweet orange and pineapple sauce.
Despite the slight taste of cooking oil in the background, everything works together.
Spicy eggplant with garlic sauce ($9. 50)
It's also an option in Sichuan, which is great and my favorite in the evening.
A rich piece of soft jacket seasoned with a delicious sauce filled with ground pork, offering a construction but the pepper tastes pretty good. Peking Pork ($8. 95)
Special lineup from the east.
A pile of Crispy Boneless pork appeared again, and this time, dressed up with seafood sauce Lake, collected soy/Plum/salty and sweet ingredients from the famous main seasoning ingredients.
This dish is very good, although I will avoid matching multiple fried dishes for personal preference in the future.
The bag is a bowl of white rice ($1. 50)
Help suck dry all kinds of sauce from the power supply. So, East Place. Old-
In an interesting way. Comfortable. Familiar.
The local people like it very much.
It's not hard to understand why they are still doing a good thing after more than 30 years.
