A recent study found that people in Vanuatu are healthier than other Pacific countries due to a high-fat traditional diet.
Professor Grant Scofield at the Oakland Institute of Technology studied eating habits in several Pacific countries, including Tonga, the Cayman Islands, Kirbas and Vanuatu.
He told Pacific beats that this trend in Vanuatu is very interesting because many people benefit from the consumption of traditional foods due to a diet of high fat and low carb.
"The problem is trying to prevent them from developing the same problem. . .
The Pacific has started to grow and once you start to grow and urbanize and change your food, everything will get really bad, "he said.
"Once you start adding. . .

"Throughout the Pacific, diabetes prevention is a top priority on the public health agenda.
While people have heard familiar advice about a low-fat diet, Dr. Schofield himself has also tried a low-carb, high-fat diet.
Not only did he lose weight, he said, but he also noticed an improvement in his overall health.
"The advice we have been giving in most developed countries is that something like coconut has a high saturated fat content and of course everyone knows that saturated fat is bad for you," he said . ".
"But it doesn't work that way in these traditional eating cultures.
"Dr. Schofield said it was back in its 1980 s when people recognized the benefits of a high-fat traditional diet in the Pacific.
Problems arise when refined and processed carbohydrates are added to the diet.
Dr. Schofield said that for Chinese and Japanese cultures, a high carb diet is effective because rice is a staple in their diet.
"My observation is that the Pacific people are not doing well with these carbs," he said . ".
"For most of the Pacific, the Pacific population has been eating high quality protein and a relatively high fat diet from plants. "Whereas (if)
Japanese and Chinese have been eating rice for thousands of years.
So they are completely different.
But as soon as you start adding a third sugar, all of these countries get bad.
"Currently, trials are being conducted in the Pacific community of New Zealand and there is growing concern about obesity and diabetes.
"What you see is the opposite of regular health advice, it's like you're too fat, you need to exercise more, eat less, and you need to lose weight in particular," Dr. schofield said.
"We took the opposite approach, which is to reduce sugar, refine and process carbohydrates, but make sure you get some fat and protein and those traditional foods.
"You will see a lot of success.
Dr. Schofield warned that a high-fat diet does not mean more fast food.
"People hear the sound of high fat. . .
"All of a sudden, they were at McDonald's or KFC fried chicken," he said . ".
"This particular type of diet has a special name called the standard American diet, which is rich in fat and sugar and, as we know, ends up very badly.
"He argues that people in the Pacific region are better off following a traditional diet.
"If your grandmother or great grandmother can recognize it, eat it," he said . ".
"If they don't eat it, forget it.
"So once you start thinking about a traditional diet, don't worry about the fat and the stuff in the food, but think about what happened before 100 and that's the way to health.
